It is observation based and in the process of working she seeks to give greater meaning to the awareness of light which holds great fascination for her. Whether it is natural light in the landscape or light falling on objects, Madeline likes to concern herself with what it reveals. Natural light is for me a metaphor for spiritual light. Following her studies she spent time painting and working with Tiwi artists on Bathurst lsland in the Northern Territory. This was a time of shared learning with very positive outcomes. She started a print workshop which went on to become Tiwi Designs. Madeline met her husband while working there and they started a family. After returning to Western Australia, as well as being a wife, mother and part-time painting teacher with TAFE, she was able to focus again on her own work and hold her first solo exhibition in 1981. For many years Madeline has worked mainly with mixed media using small marks of soft pastel in pure colours over thinly splashed gouache. The colour palettes in her work are derived directly from her photographic documentation, written notations and watercolour field studies. Sarah’s observation of nature and the subtle connection between colour, form, structure and light intrigues her, and so began her conversations with colour. Developing this observation through her use of ‘colour waves’ in the gradation manipulation of gouache allows a show of visual experiences that translates to experimental notions and ideas. Ideas like kinetic and optical visual play lend themselves to further experimentation that can highlight a memory or experience. Sometimes a connection is made and this is a gift in itself. Arriving from Singapore in her early teens, Sarah was struck by the quality of the light here in Western Australia which contrasted with her formative experience of light bound by tropical lushness. Her foundation years at university further guided her to her lifelong fascination with colour. Being raised in a Malay Chinese household and crossed between the Eastern and Western cultures, the experience has contributed unwittingly to an enquiry of connections. The work Sarah conducts gives consideration to this underlying notion.

This item is available at Mundaring Arts Centre.

Antony Muia - 'Tree 2' 2022

MATERIALS: Mixed Media on Archival Rag

DIMENSIONS: 42 x 31 cm cm - Unframed

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Muia’s works reflect both the representational qualities of our surroundings and our relationships with the environment.
