ABOUT THE ARTIST

Matthew Sakanya was introduced to ceramics in 2019 as part of his undergraduate teaching degree at Edith Cowan University. He remembers spending hours in the studio making his first coiled pot for an art project and he quickly became fascinated with wheel throwing. 

Sukanya is currently trying to establish himself in the field as a developing artist, with a particular focus on functional stoneware. Learning from quality instructors and teachers is crucially important in how Sukanya approaches working with clay; it isn’t just about techniques, but values and ways of thinking. Sukanya strives to achieve simple, but harmonious unity in the interaction between ceramic forms and glazes.
