ABOUT THE ARTIST
Nazerul Ben-Dzulkefli is a Singapore-born artist who currently lives and works in Perth, Western Australia. His works have made their rounds in various group exhibitions in Boorloo since 2017. Since moving to Perth in 2017, he developed an affinity with clay as a medium and creates sculptural works exploring the themes of longing and belonging while navigating his new identity as a Singaporean Malay-Javanese migrant in Perth. Through text, texture and images on clay objects, shrines, guardians and quasi-ritual objects, he wishes to take on the role of custodian to familial memories and to preserve microhistories and tell stories of personal experiences growing up in Singapore. When he is not working in his studio, Nazerul enjoys walking the grounds of a nearby vineyard, gardening in his backyard, and re-imagining curious folk Malay and Javanese rituals, writing systems, demons, spirits and demigods of the Malay-Indonesian Archipelago.
