Joanna Brown trained in Visual Arts at Curtin University before completing her Art Teaching qualifications. After a brief teaching career, she pursued a Master’s in Art Therapy at Edith Cowan University. Her diverse career spans large-scale festival installations, stage décor and fashion design, She has also run a freelance design business, working with government and private clients, particularly in the festival and music industries. Alongside these ventures, Brown has maintained an active art practice, mainly now focusing on public art projects.

Her work is deeply rooted in botanical themes, particularly local flora. She explores the everyday plant life around her—neighbours’ gardens, roadside greenery, and the mix of native and imported species. Her art captures small, often-overlooked botanical spaces, highlighting their role in shaping our sense of place, self, and community.
Her use of symmetry emphasises form, bold colours, flattened perspective, and iconic compositions give her work a ‘folk’ quality. While unmistakably Australian in subject matter, her work resonates with many cultures, reflecting the shared botanical environments that connect diverse communities.
