June is a strong Yawuru-BardiNgarluma-Yindjibarndi woman who expresses her love for country and ancestral dream stories through painting acrylic and ochres on canvas.
Junegrew up in Broome, orRubibias it is known byYawarupeople.
“My mum is Yindjibarndi-Ngarlumaand my dad is Bardi-DjawiandYawaru. My mum was a cultural woman, soI’dalways end up back out atWarralongandStrelleywith the Mardu people.
At this time, wewould go on Country with our grandparents on the back of an old truck. My grandmother and Judith’s grandmother. They are all sisters you see.Very close. They’reYindjibarndi,NgarlumaandKariyarra, so I have connections through all those clans. Everyone used to jump on the backof the truckwith their swags and the camp dogs.
My grandfather, Adam Barker, was aWarnmandesert man and did traditional carvings; boomerangs, shields, spears. Hetaughtus how to do the little animals like blue tongue, snakeand goanna.
Ididn’tend up with that skill, but I watchedhim andtransferredthose patterns onto canvas.
