ABOUT THE ARTIST
Martin Baxter, a potter situated on Wardandi country in the southwest region of Western Australia centres his practice on handmaking functional stoneware ceramics, experimenting with form, glazes, and firing techniques. Baxter is inspired by the history of ceramics as a craft, the distinctive forms of various lineages and makers, and the way knowledge is shared between people and places. As a self-directed learner, Baxter has learnt from friends and mentors who have passed down knowledge and provided access to their kilns. The process of wood firing and the range of variables - the type of wood, the clay, application of glaze, and design of the kiln - create non-repeatable pieces. Baxter aims to capture this uniqueness of form and tactility in his pieces.
