A meeting place, a junction of cultures and histories. Commissioned as part of Midland’s Centenary in 1995, The Junction reflects a place devoid of people but marked by their impact on first nations people and the working community of Midland. To help accentuate the importance of the workshops, parts of the main centre of Midland have been placed within the vast railway workshop space itself.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Nigel Hewitt is a senior visual artist based in both Perth, Western Australia and Hobart, Tasmania. Nigel Hewitt’s artistic career has developed strongly and consistently since his graduation from the Claremont School of Art in 1977. Nigel has exhibited extensively in solo and group shows around Western Australia and nationally. Hewitt has been awarded several residencies, has extensive teaching experience, has been published widely, has been chosen for numerous private and corporate commissions and has received many local and national art awards throughout his career. Hewitt’s work is widely collected and he is represented in the collections of the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the University of Western Australia, Curtin University, Edith Cowan University, Artbank, SGIO, BankWest, Wesfarmers, Holmes a Court Collection, The Stein Collection, among many others. In 2015 Hewitt won The Glover Prize which at the time was the country’s richest landscape art award, and in 2016 was granted a Creative Development Fellowship from the Department of Culture and the Arts.
