ABOUT THE ARTWORK

"Immersion in the Pilbara prompted vivid memories of childhood, recalling happy times with my family in Marble Bar. Re-acquainting with the landscape I had not seen for 36 years, I found myself captivated by the ground – the dirt, the rocks, the textures, the plants. Ultimately, my memories drew me to spinifex, the native grass, I overlooked it as a child, instinctively stepping around it to avoid its sharp spikes. This time, its beauty and fragility imprinted on me, as I came away with awe for the vastness and beauty of this place, but also a renewed gratitude to my parents for instilling in me a profound appreciation and respect for this beautiful country." - Shanti Gelmi

ABOUT THE ARTIST 

Shanti Gelmi is an Australian born child of migrant Indian parents and, as a child, spent lengthy periods of time living in the West Australian outback and Perth Hills region whilst spending holiday time in India. Her upbringing has been heavily influenced by the Catholic faith, Indian culture and associated traditions and festivals which she rejected as a means of fitting in in Australia. Her art practice is allowing her to explore this 'other' space as a means of understanding cultural relationships as they evolve and are refined as reactions to experiences.
