ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born in New Zealand, Chris Reid became a permanent resident of Australia in 1986. Chris’ appreciation of, and respect for, the natural environment has grown over time and with increasing exposure to diverse wilderness locations. It was after trips into the Australian outback where he observed the special nature of our native timber that his creative interest in making objects out of wood was inspired. Chris has endeavored to reflect in his pieces the beautiful shape, colour and texture of these unique timbers.

Chris moved to Denmark, Western Australia, in 1989 and built a home on a picturesque property on Scotsdale Road. This experience expanded his knowledge of timbers to include species like jarrah and sheoak and other regional timbers.

In February 1996 Chris enrolled in the Advanced Certificate of Woodcraft course at the Great Southern Regional College in Albany. Chris has been exhibiting since 1990 and has work placed in prestigious collections such as the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Parliament House in Canberra, the Museum and Art Galleries of the Northern Territory, and the City of Addachi, Tokyo. Chris’s work has evolved over time from carved bowls, to finely worked sculptural forms, constructed objects, furniture, woodturning, domestic productions lines and large installations.
